DOES GENDER EQUALITY FOSTER NEW PATHS FOR SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT? A TOURISM PERSPECTIVE
UNIVERSITY OF AVEIRO, PORTUGAL

Over the last decades tourism has become one of the major international economic activities, creating much needed employment and economic development worldwide. Even though it is a female dominated sector, it has a strong vertical segregation, i.e. women mostly occupy low-level positions, whereas men are more represented in top-level and management positions. Since women are generally better qualified in this sector, as they hold the majority of graduate and postgraduate degrees in tourism related courses, this situation raises not only ethical but also economic concerns.

In fact, many studies have provided evidence that companies which have more women in their top boards perform better financially and organizationally than strictly male-dominated companies. Hence, does gender equality favour social and economic development in the tourism sector? And does economic performance favour gender equality? What are the implications of the different economic models for gender equality? Are the most competitive companies more committed to enhance equality of opportunities internally? Are economic growth and gender equality mutually reinforcing or mutually exclusive? Are there constraints that affect highly-qualified women in the development of strategies that enhance the competitiveness of their companies?

The conference aims at creating space for critical thinking and debate, while bringing together scholars, young researchers, practitioners and policy makers, who have experience in research, teaching or practical work in this field. Presentations on innovative perspectives and critical discussion of the existing strategies, ideologies, current practices and projects of empowerment of women are especially welcomed. The aim is to build a critical glance at the endeavours and practices in this field, gain and exchange knowledge, and to think about their social, economic and political impact. The conference purpose is to both disseminate the findings of research conducted in this area and raise awareness and critical thinking on women's vertical mobility, and to explore new research possibilities, including cross-national research in similar domains.

In addition to the plenary and parallel sessions of this conference, participants will also be able to take part of the INVTUR 2014 international conference and the Forum for Tourism Research.
